James Takateru Markell, professionally known as james takateru (stylized in all lowercase) is a musician, producer, visual artist, and graphic designer from Brooklyn, NY.

Jamie's first experiments with music production date back to when they were as young as 13 years old, and their style has consistently evolved and transformed over the past 7 years. Their music inhabits an intersection between the indie pop sound of artists like yeule or Drain Gang's Ecco2k, and the more cutting edge and experimental sounds of producers such as CFCF or Jamie xx. To Jamie, their output is perfectly described by their tagline: "falling in and out of dreaming." Their music exists drifting between different worlds, crossing between sonic planes to create a unique but—familiar—sound; one with reference points throughout the greater electronic pop music sphere, but with no exact equal.

Additionally, Jamie has worked prolifically as a record producer and frequent collaborator with other artists and musicians across the greater internet music scene, having produced and co-written 15 songs by other artists since the summer of 2022. Jamie has recorded alongside hyperpop sensation CMTEN, indie electronic producer ana kennedy (formerly RILEY THE MUSICIAN), and industrial hip-hop outfit ABBATIA— with whom they produced almost all of Red Room, the band’s 2022 EP (released on A2B2). All of these artists exist in entirely separate genres, yet Jamie manages to perfectly compliment their respective styles, assisting them in executing their disparate visions with ease.

Jamie is also a member of Philadelphia-based media company and artist collective ORANGECAP Studios (hereby shortened as ORCA). Their collaborations with other ORCA members are quite frequent, both in-studio and as a performer in ORCA’s explosive live shows. Recently, Jamie has embarked on their first ever run of solo performances—dubbed “ghost Circles Live”—in venues in and around Brooklyn. Outside of music, Jamie works as a freelance graphic designer, most often for fellow ORCA members; their designs can be seen on the live posters created for every ORCA live show, and in much of the group’s album art. Jamie is also experienced as a video editor, having helped to piece together promotional content and music videos for a variety of other artists, as well as themselves.
